The Top Five Open World Games of All Time

Open world games are great because you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. In most cases, these titles allow you to explore an entirely virtual environment, be it a galaxy far, far away, or an alternate version of the Wild West. These are the top five open-world games of all time

Skyrim

Bethesda Game Studios’ Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is not only one of the best open-world games, but one of the best games period. With its expansive world, breathtaking visuals, and a vast array of things to do, it’s no wonder why it’s considered one of the greatest video games ever made. Plus, with mods, the game is constantly being updated and improved upon, making it a game that you can easily spend hundreds of hours on without ever getting bored. However, with the PC version having gone free in recent years, players now have a multitude of options when it comes to this game. If they want to play on their PS4 or Xbox One (both also fantastic consoles), they can purchase the console version at retail price which includes all DLC content (in addition to mod support). Or they could just buy The Elder Scrolls Online, which has a more linear gameplay style and takes place 1000 years before Skyrim but features many familiar locations. However players choose to play, there are so many ways for them to enjoy what is arguably one of the best games ever made.

Fallout 4

I don’t think any game has given me as much freedom as Fallout 4. The world is vast and there are so many different things to do. I can explore the world, or I can focus on building my settlement. I can follow the main story, or I can go off and do my own thing. There’s so much to see and do in Fallout 4 that I never get bored. Every time I play it, I find something new. It’s a testament to how Bethesda’s games just keep getting better and better with each installment.

Red Dead Redemption

There’s something about the Wild West that just captivates us. And Red Dead Redemption did an amazing job of bringing that time period to life. The game is set in 1911 and you play as John Marston, a former outlaw who is trying to start fresh. But old habits die hard, and John quickly finds himself embroiled in a web of deceit and betrayal. The game is huge, with plenty of side quests and activities to keep you busy for hours on end. And the story is fantastic, full of twists and turns that will keep you hooked until the very end.

Grand Theft Auto V

Rockstar North’s 2013 action-adventure game takes the top spot on our list. GTA V is set within the fictional state of San Andreas and follows three protagonists—Michael, Trevor, and Franklin—as they carry out heists across Los Angeles. The game’s massive open world lets players explore Los Santos and Blaine County at their leisure, with plenty of side missions and activities to keep them busy. And with its online multiplayer mode, GTA V has nearly limitless replay value. It has spawned a mini-economy among its users that transcends just buying items for themselves. Players have been known to create virtual drug empires by buying up in-game currency from those who have more than they need, as well as investing in player-owned nightclubs and taxis that can then be rented out for an hourly fee via a third-party website (think Uber). GTA V also gives gamers unprecedented freedom in how they choose to play: there are no loading screens when switching between the game’s three main characters; it isn’t necessary to complete every single mission if one desires only the main story, and there are always alternate ways into certain areas if stealth is preferred over the mayhem.

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag

There’s something for everyone in Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. The game features three main cities – Havana, Kingston, and Nassau – that you can explore at your leisure. And, if you get tired of the cities, you can always take to the high seas and engage in some good old-fashioned piracy. Black Flag also features a robust multiplayer mode that lets you take on other players from all over the world. Another cool feature is the ability to captain your own ship and customize it with various weapons. With its great graphics, realistic gameplay, fun naval combat, and pirate-themed storyline, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag is an excellent choice for open-world fans.
